Ready for Quiz #23?

Swell!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

  1. 500!!! I don’t know why, but I am especially happy for getting this. Had completely forgotten the name of the Will Smith Tommy Lee Jones film, even if I watched it all the time as a kid. You could have slipped in a High Fidelity reference, as his autobiography is Rob’s favourite book.😁

    • I had forgotten that from high fidelity – I don’t think I’ve seen it in 10 years or so, it’s due for a rewatch!
Nice work on the 500 Amrita – oh and I thought of you yesterday, we were at a friend’s house and ‘mint car’ appeared on the playlist, I was quite pleased!

      • I haven’t seen it in a while as well! I appreciate your mentioning Joaquin Phoenix. Only true fans will know if his portrayal was accurate or not, but he’s one of my favorite actors. Highly recommend The Master, if you haven’t already seen it.

Wild Mood Swings has definitely become one of my favourite albums to play in the last two months! The tracks are stronger than some of the other albums that people rate higher. I don’t understand why it didn’t work in 1996, but maybe Cure fans can help give it its due recognition now by talking more about it.😀

      • I’m very pleased to hear WMS has earned a place in your listening rotation Amrita!
I find the same thing with The Cure – their early stuff is revered but it doesn’t do a great deal for me.
That mid career stuff however, there’s no substitute!

      • I do like the early stuff, especially The Top and Pornography. Granted, when thinking of a recognizable Cure ‘sound’, the first 2-3 albums don’t come to mind. But for the time, and the kind of influences they had, those albums are still very competent. I love Siouxie and The Banshees, so while it’s not exactly the same, I’m in the minority who enjoys The Cure from that era.

If I remember correctly, I don’t think you’ve reviewed their albums on the 1001 yet. I certainly don’t remember reading your thoughts on Disintegration. I’d love it if you deconstruct that cringey review on the 1001, calling it a “sob fest”, if I remember correctly. I find myself inclined to write an essay ‘in defense’ of Robert Smith’s emotions!

      • I’d forgotten about that sobfest line from the book review – cringe-worthy indeed!
I reviewed Seventeen Seconds a couple years ago, haven’t reviewed the other 2 yet.
Especially with side A of disintegration, I’ll have a tough time preventing the review from being a love letter to Mr. Smith!

      • You know, you shouldn’t resist that. Why be a run of the mill reviewer, trying to dissect it intellectually? I saw Robert Smith say in an interview that he prefers people who create to those who criticize. I’d suggest you run with your instincts and maybe put it in a song! Celebrate the emotion, instead of shying away from it. Robert Smith would have done that!

  2. 500! Is it OK to admit that I don’t like him all that much?

    • Admittedly I wasn’t a big fan until a few years ago, but I changed my tune after the live albums – it’s OK to admit to 500 points too!

  3. Beautifully weighted first clue, Geoff. Sat with it (and a glass of NZ Marlborough Chard) and came up with the money. 500 please.

    • That’s a fine way to respond to a quiz Bruce, I might have to start writing the quizzes with a glass as well – can’t argue with the results!

  4. 500 points for me too!

  5. Tangled Up In Music permalink

    500.

  6. 500, my first concert ever. I was 10.

    • That’s setting the bar high for concerts – nice score too!

      • I know right? June Carter kicked off her shoes and danced. I don’t recall exactly why I asked to go! My dad went. He had gone the previous night (it was a two-nighter). I think he was talking all about how amazing the first night was, and I was interested so I asked to go see him on the second night. Very high bar indeed.

      • I think The Hip (trouble at the henhouse tour) was my first show – now Gordie didn’t kick off his shoes like June, but there was no shortage of microphone stand dancing either!

  7. jprobichaud permalink

    500. But it was a guess. That’s amazing that he only has the one studio album in that list.

    • You’re off to a good start in the quizzes JP!
What a terrific example of the ‘if at first you don’t succeed’ advice, his first 50-odd studio albums weren’t list worthy, but he kept working and finally got one!

  8. 300 for me. I think I maybe just don’t think about these enough? I kinda just scroll through… nope, nope, yes! Must try harder!

    • Perhaps there should be a timer – weight the score with how quickly it was answered? Either way, 300’s a good score, especially if achieved quickly!

  9. 500! Back in the game. Wasn’t he jailed dor attacking an ostrich?

  10. 500 for me! not to many artists stick out over 80 albums so i kinda knew that from reading about this person! $$$$

  11. I get 300 today.

  12. OMG I broke 10,000 points last week…

  13. Oh man, that’s a 500 for sure. That studio record is amazing, for sure. And if my guesses are correct, the live albums are too!

  14. 400 and I am deeply ashamed this artist was second only to the Beatles in my parents house.

  15. Such a fan, 500 for sure.

  16. Zack permalink

I’m really proud of myself for getting 400. The next clues were too easy.

  17. 500 for me too. My mother-in-law saw him in the 60’s and siad he was boring!!

  18. Guessed at 500, confirmed at 300!

  19. 400. Only one studio album?!?! Come on!

    • Nice work – and haha, I guess it was lucky #87 that finally convinced the 1001 list editors he was list-worthy in the studio format!

  20. 500. So certain am I that I don’t need the whole of the first clue or the rest of the clues.

Also, I could give a number of reasons why this shouldn’t be the only studio album on that list.

    • Exemplary work J – and I don’t think you’re alone in thinking more of the other 87 albums ought to be on the list!

      • Mental. I could pick at least 5. I shall post about them. Some day.

  21. 500 for the week

  22. 500!! RR is a genius bearded producer. Loved your 400 pts clue.
