Ready for Quiz #38?

Y’all ready for this?

Quiz Rules/Format
(feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Artist of the Week #38
Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

500 points……………….. In a somewhat less than effusive description of the band, according to writer Chuck Klosterman, this artist “is the (cuss)iest (cuss)ing band I’ve ever heard in my entire (cuss)ing life…they sound like a mediocre photocopy of Travis (who sounds like a mediocre photocopy of Radiohead)…their greatest (cuss)ing artistic achievement is a video where the blandly attractive frontman walks on a beach on a cloudy afternoon.”

400 points………………..In the tradition of highly effective but largely under-recognized rhythm sections, Guy Berryman and Will Champion have been playing the bass and drums for this group since the late 90s

300 points…………………They have 2 albums on the 1001 list: Parachutes & A Rush of Blood to the Head

200 points………………….Guitarist Jonny Buckland and frontman Chris Martin round out the quartet.

100 points………………..The artist is C_____

Answer: لعب بارد

Thanks for playing!

Verbalize the Positive

My eventual review of the band will be considerably kinder than Mr. Klosterman’s!

    500. After reading what Klosterman had to say there was no doubt in my mind as to who it was.

  2. 500 for me because I read that quote somewhere and happen to agree with him (all deference to their fans and here’s hoping it doesn’t colour your own run-through their work)!

  3. Jordan Richardson permalink

  4. After spending a slab of time trying to work out what single cuss-word could replace all the (cuss) edits, I inched towards the answer… warm, warmer… cooler… for a final (cuss)ing guess that happened to be correct. 500.

It was a brave set of clues. Nothing yellow about you, quizmaster.

  5. 300. I love that 500 point clue. Once I identified the band that clue made perfect sense.

  6. 300 (though I love the 500 one – a mediocre copy of a mediocre copy!! A judgement I would agree with, no offense to their fans…)

    500. Haha. Wow, Chuck. Tell us how you really feel… I don’t think they’re all that bad. Though, I also don’t think Travis is all that bad.

  8. 300 High Fivers!

  9. Relieved to achieve a new low of 100, in retrospect I am proud I know so little about this band.

  10. 500. I like some songs, but generally agree with Klostermann. More just competent and unexciting than terrible though.

  11. A lucky guess at 500. I’m with Chuck on this one.

  12. Haha 500. Guess Chuck hit the nail on the head with that description.

  13. I got 300…I happen to not mind the band’s music, but Chuck has a point.

  14. 500 points! Whoop, helps that I totally agree with Chuck personally haha.

  15. 500. That quote is actually kinder than much else I’ve heard about them! Calling them “mediocre” (of a mediocre) but not absolute rubbish and even complimenting the frontman’s looks ( blandly attractive is still attractive).

    • I thought that was an interesting flattering insult – you’re attractive, but blandly so? Or bland, but still attractive? And mediocre too, it’s not saying they’re awful or awesome, more adequate?
In any event, 500’s a fine score, nothing bland about it!

  16. 300 for me!

  17. 500 points! The cloudy beach walking gave it away.

  18. 200. I guess I need to see this video.

  19. 500! Yas!

I have to admit, I still enjoy those first two albums. The second of which is pretty brilliant, even if I do tend to agree that they are somewhat mediocre (I happen to think Travis are dreadful and that Chuck doesn’t know what he’s talking about).

    • Yas sir!
I actually enjoy much of the first 4, I haven’t invested in anything in the last decade or so though.
Chuck & I often see eye to eye, we diverged a bit on this assessment though!

      • I think the third had its moments, but there were clear signs that they were going very U2 (uninspired and a bit ‘by numbers’).

I do think it’s a bit of a popular thing to bash them, though. Kinda like the Nickleback and Creed thing… though I do believe those bands are the pits. Ha!

      • I’m glad you mentioned U2 J – it feels like one of those groups with the multiple choice question, ‘when did you go off ____?’
The sound did get a bit grandiose in the mid 2000s, but I’d say Violet Hill (from 2008 or so) might be their best track!

      • U2, R.E.M., Kings Of Leon, Coldplay. They’re 4 bands that I genuinely believe got lazy and decided to just make money.

Violet Hill, eh? I dunno… I wouldn’t like to comment before familiarising myself with it.

  20. 500. I like at least one of their songs and don’t mind a few others. Still love that description tho’

    • Well played James – and even though I don’t agree with Chuck, I too am a fan of the description!

  21. 300 for me! (But I love the 500 clue)

  22. Not a bi fan of this group but 100 point clue gave it to me
