2021 Artists of the Week (so far):

Bruno Mars, Stone Temple Pilots, Carole King, 2Pac, “Weird” Al Yankovic

.

My thanks to all who have participated in the “Artist of the Week” quizzes so far.

Congrats to all those who correctly identified “Weird” Al Yankovic last week.

The results after 5 weeks (as of Wednesday evening – results submitted after that time will be added to next week’s spreadsheet):

.

Ready for Quiz #6?

100%!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Artist of the Week #6
Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

For:

500 points………………..American band, featuring bassist/guitarist/vocalist Kim Gordon, formed in NYC in 1981.

They have a quintet of albums on the 1001 list.

Perhaps more impressively, they have 5 consecutive albums on the 1001 list: each record from EVOL (1986) through Dirty (1992) has been deemed essential!

.

.

.

.

.

400 points……………….Over the years, they have also been influential &/or made appearances on screen.

Considering the name of the film (and the lead character’s name, Thurston), they almost certainly inspired the 2010 film Daydream Nation.

And a telltale sign you’ve made it as a band? You appear on The Simpsons, as this group did in the Homerpalooza episode (shown below):

.

.

.

.

.

300 points……………………Two-word band name:

The first word is a part of the former NBA team, the Seattle Super_______s; the second word, as acknowledged by Schmidt on The New Girl, an indicator of a horrible neighbourhood? “There are _______s everywhere!”

.

.

.

.

.

200 points………………..Or as Puzzle clue #2, the missing words in the Sega Genesis game & George Bernard Shaw quote below:

.

.

.

.

.

100 points………………..The artist is S______ Y______

.

.

.

.

Answer:  فرقة شباب سونيك

(Please post your points earned in the comments section)

Thanks for playing!

…..

Verbalize the Positive

I always enjoy when google translate struggles at first with an artist (here I believe the initial attempt resulted in ‘young voice’) – but add ‘band’ to the translation, it gets the right artist, and adds a bonus ‘squad’ at the end!

  1. 500. I reckon you should have made the first clue 100%.

  2. Listening to one of theirs for my book/album group, which rather helped a 500. But the pictorial clue is once again priceless, Geoff.

    • Much appreciated, Bruce – our mutual friend Aaron had good advice to approach their music as ‘art’ rather than ‘music’ to optimize appreciation!

  3. 500, never heard a second of their music but recognise that name due to a wikipedia rabbit hole after researching Rob Zombie (then white zombie, then old rob zombie, then noise rock)

    • Sometimes those rabbit holes can be costly in terms of time consumption – but they can pay off in other ways!

  4. Harrison permalink

200 please. Never even heard of them.

    • I’m pleased you were still able to decode the name despite not knowing the group, Harrison!

    • Holen permalink

What, you’ve never heard of… wait, can’t say here.

  5. 500 points this week please, Stephen! This bunch were one of my all-time favourite bands for a very, very long time…I don’t listen to them so much anymore, though the 1986 album mentioned in the clue remains a favourite, and Kim Gordon is one of my all-time heroes!

    • Exemplary work, Adela – I saw our library has her memoir ‘girl in a band,’ it looked like an interesting read!

      • I can highly recommend it, Stephen — it was one of my favourite books for a really long time! She writes beautifully (a lot like Joan Didion) and her life story is incredibly fascinating!

      • Sounds promising!

  6. I big slip for me this week, down to 300. I don’t know them at all other than name so 5 essential albums didn’t mean jack even with naming two.

  7. 500 and thats due to once again having a subscription to Rolling Stone and reading Creem Magazine back in the day as they featured this act quite frequently and as well as having 5 entry points on your list!

  8. 500 please. I have more records by Thai band than any other

  9. 500. Why am I having a serious deja vu?

  10. 500 points please, Geoff!

  11. Zack permalink

    500. Back on top!

  12. jprobichaud permalink

In spite of the conversation we had in the comments section of one of your previous posts, you had me at Kim Gordon. 500.

  13. This one drove me bananas! I had just recently read about a group that had an album called EVOL somewhere… I just could not remember… 300.

  14. 500 because well this was my era on some level.

  15. Just 200 this week.

  16. 500! Woohoo!

    • Woohoo indeed, Sarca – to both the score and the news that there’s another tandem review series on the horizon!

  17. 500 each for me and Mika, both off the Kim Gordon clue.

  18. Love this band. 500 points put through the Waching Machine please!

  19. Easy peasy 500 squeezy!

  20. Holen permalink

    500.

  21. 500 please Geoff. Gordon’s book is great.

  22. Awww so close! I almost got 100 points, but I couldn’t get the second word! Maybe I’ll get it next time, thanks for informing me on a new band Geoff!

  23. Paul permalink

    Streak continues! 500 please!
