2021 Artists of the Week (so far):

Bruno Mars, Stone Temple Pilots, Carole King

My thanks to all who have participated in the “Artist of the Week” quizzes so far.

Congrats to all those who correctly identified Carole King last week.

The results after 3 weeks (as of Monday evening – results submitted after that time will be added to next week’s spreadsheet):

Ready for Quiz #4?

Keep Ya Head Up!

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Artist of the Week #4
Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

500 points………………..American artist, born in 1971 (birth name Lesane Parish Crooks). Though he was born in NYC, he was a key part of the West Coast hip hop scene in the mid-90s.

He has one album on the 1001 list, Me Against the World, released the year before his death…

400 points……………….in Las Vegas on September 13, 1996.

And Dear Mama, was he ever impressively prolific, recording 150 songs during the final year of his life, while also acting in numerous films (including Bullet and Gridlock’d).

300 points……………………The artist’s name, if you pretend the ‘e’ in the second word is a ‘u’ (and don’t worry, if you don’t get it on this puzzle clue, I Ain’t Mad at Cha: there’s still another puzzle clue on the way!)

200 points………………..The California Love artist’s name, if you continue to pretend the ‘e’ in the second word is a ‘u’:

100 points………………..The artist is T______ S________ (or 2P___ S_______)

Answer: توباك شاكور

(Please post your points earned in the comments section)

Thanks for playing!

  1. 500 – lucky I caught some history of hip hop on Netflix.

  2. jprobichaud permalink

    500. I guessed it because I remember his death being such a big deal at the time. I don’t know that I know much of his stuff though.

  3. Harrison permalink

    500, from a pure guess

  4. 300. Would’ve been quicker but for some reason I was expecting to see “convicted sex offfender” to confirm it.

  5. 400 because but I loved the pictorial clues.

  6. See me Rollin’ with my 500 points

  7. I lucked out on a hip hop one and guessed right at 500. The clues for 300 and 200 points are killer!

  8. 500 for me believe it or not.

  9. Threw a Hail Mary pass and caught the touchdown in the end zone for 500 as I remember reading at the time about this fella as he introduced the reunited KISS In Makeup at the 96 Grammys.

    • Like Doug Flutie’s last second play for Boston College, sometimes those Hail Mary passes work out beautifully, Deke!

  10. A lucky 500 guess thanks to working in a Record Store from 1994 on!

  11. 300 please Geoff.

  12. Zack permalink

I managed 500 from the album title. I never knew that was a stage name!

  13. 200 for me today.

  14. I’ll take 500 of the finest points you have please, Geoff.

  15. 500 for me and Mika, both from lucky guesses this week.

  16. 500 please. Gridlock’d is a fine film.

  17. 0 points for me this week, sorry. I knew where you were going with it, but I couldn’t remember his full name. I had fun though! Thanks Geoff!

  18. Easy peasy 500 squeezy!

  19. Paul permalink

Put me down for 500 sir! When I saw it was hip hop I thought I was doomed since not my genre but was able to get it!

    • Well played, Paul S – I put together the spreadsheet earlier this week, so it will be added to next week’s totals!

  20. I am so sorry Stephen, I just realised that I forgot to comment this one — alas, a mere 200 for me for this one… But I love the very clever puzzles!
