Ready for Quiz #23?

Yes Indeed!

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Artist of the Week #23
Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

500 points………………..Canadian (CanCon!) artist, born in Toronto in 1986, birth name Aubrey Graham.

Somewhat of a polarizing artist, as many seem to feel a bit like either Jerry or George (and less frequently in between) when it comes to him!

400 points……………….Thanks to his hit singles like God’s Plan, Started From the Bottom, and Nice For What, he holds the record for Most Top 10 US Billboard Chart appearances.

Also, credit where credit is due: he was an effective actor as ‘Jimmy Brooks’ in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

300 points……………………He is officially a ‘Global Ambassador’ for the Toronto Raptors.

And as we’ve arrived at the 300 clue, “that can only mean one thing” — it’s time for a math equation!

200 points………………..He shares his stage name with the name of a male duck:

100 points………………..The artist is D______.

Answer:  دريك

(Please post your points earned in the comments section)

Thanks for playing!

Verbalize the Positive

I like how in his song, Nice For What, he sampled Lauryn Hill’s Ex-Factor – fantastic Lauryn Hill tune!

  1. Harrison permalink

Not a clue, despite five very serviceable ones being presented to me right above

  2. Paul permalink

Total whiff this week – now the artists name but not into artist and unfortunately none of the clues helped

  3. 500. Toronto was a big help as I know he’s keen on their NBA team. I also knew he was the nephew of Larry Graham.

    • I didn’t know about that Larry Graham connection – I may have to borrow that bit of info when I eventually review Sly & The Family Stone!

  4. jprobichaud permalink

I don’t really know his music but I know of his Degrassi work and as ambassador for my favourite NBA team. Both of those make him alright by me.

  5. 500 each for me and Mika. Started from the bottom, now we’re here.

    • Now you’re both also into 5-digits on the scoreboard – and I think it’s shaping up to be another photo finish at the end of the year between you!

      • She’s smart and I’m lucky and that’s not a winning proposition for me in the long term.

  6. Holen permalink

I know him, but not his music. So I struck out this week. I had no idea he had a girl’s name. That probably wouldn’t go well in the rap world.

    • Not to worry, Holen – I think you’ll be in good company there this week. I have a feeling it may be one of those 500s or 0s weeks, a bit like the polarizing nature of this artist!

  7. 200 based on the animal, but never heard an artist by that name

  8. 500 points please!!!! ‘Degrassi’ is my second favorite show of all time (‘Full House’ is my favorite). Spinner and Jimmy’s friendship were goals!

    • I remember chatting with you a while ago about Degrassi, Lana – I had a feeling you’d do really well this week, terrific work!

      • Thanks so much for the quiz and for the boost Geoff, I really needed that lol! I wasn’t expecting you to cover him, so that was a pleasant surprise (not that I listen to his music, I just love the show so much).

  9. 300 for me please. Guess I’ll laugh now, cry later

  10. 200 because I know the name for a male duck.

  11. Zack permalink

    300. I learned a lot about him.

  12. 100 please.

  13. 400 for me! My kids listen to him (at least on the radio) and that God’s Plan song we heard a lot.

    • I always ask students what they’re listening to – and for the last decade or so, if they were to name one specific artist (rather than ‘spotify’ or ‘a playlist’), he’d likely be the most common answer.
So having teenage kids would be a good resource this week, John!

      • They’ve kept me current with a lot of songs, but I can’t say I like it. I’ve returned the favor though as my youngest has a great classic rock playlist building with the Clash, Kiss, Joan Jett and many more.

  14. I’ll take a 300 today.

  15. 300 thanks to the pic clue!

  16. 500 points as I have 2 daughters that play this artist. Glad there listening habits helped me this week!

    • I was going to say, if you’ve had kids that were teenagers at any point in the last 10 years, they’ll be a good resource this week.
Excellent work, Deke & daughters !

  17. 500! I’m jonesing for another run through Seinfeld. It has been about 5 years. It is time.

  18. 500 points because I am trying to pay more attention to new music. Is this even new? Anyway.

  19. 200 for me again this week!
