Ready for Quiz #21?

It’s the thing to say!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

For:

500 points………………..American singer/comedian/actor, born in Tacoma, Washington in 1903.

Prior to his death in 1977, he appeared in over 70 films & recorded over 1600 (!) songs.

Which, could only be described as “Wow!” (or somewhere between “ouch” and “boing”)

400 points……………….A little earlier than usual, puzzle clue #1!

300 points……………………Although he performed songs that were relevant year-round, long before there was Bublé, this artist was the ultimate Christmas crooner.

And here he is, as portrayed by Joe Flaherty, in Dave Foley’s immortal The True Meaning of Christmas Specials:

Verbalize the Positive

I admire how he rarely arrives at a note directly – why hit the note right away when you can take your time swooping/crooning into it!

    100 please

  2. 200, well at least the Cros sparked a thought.

    • I was tempted to put the search engine logo at 400 – I don’t know how many people actually use it!

      • It is infuriating when it appears. I’m not sure anyone uses it.

      • I heard a stat (I think it was a joke but would be perhaps even more amusing if actually true):

the #1 user search on the aforementioned microsoft search engine? google!

  3. 300. Probably should have got it from the 400, as I worked through permutations of Chandler, Matthew, and Perry, but didn’t try the 4th option…

    • Not to worry, Graham – I have a feeling this week is your last year’s ‘Venom.’ And with a 300 as the low point, all is well!

  4. Ring it up. 400 please.

  5. 400 for me. Not an artist I ever expected on the list.

  6. I’ll take 500 for this fellow.

  7. 400 smackers Sir. Tough loss for your boys yesterday…

    • Well played, Deke – and yes, not their finest game! It was a series that was inevitably going to go 6 or 7, so hopefully they bounce back at home

  8. 300 for me. I focused on Chandler and Matthew in the 400 clue and might have had a better chance getting it had I thought of him as a comedian.

    • I lifted the singer/comedian/actor bio when I went to wikipedia to get his date of birth. In hindsight, I think of him more as a singer/actor, but wikipedia was determined to make him a triple threat!

      • A side of his game I’ve just never really considered. I guess he did a few flicks with Bob Hope, eh?

      • I believe so – I’m most familiar with his seasonal films!

  9. Paul permalink

300 please. Got it on that clue but didn’t know I did until next clue if that makes sense

    • That makes perfect sense, Paul – and those are the rules exactly. You earn the points for guesses, even if they’re not fully confirmed until later – well done on the Dave Foley clue today!

  10. 500! That first clue had the perfect amount of *make me think*.

  11. 400. I got it on the first pic. The second one doesn’t even look like himself.

  12. Zack permalink

    200. I need to get better at recognizing hockey players.

    • Not to worry, Zack – I’m pleased you were able to recognize search engine logos / singer-songwriters!

  13. 500 each for Mika and me. Her forcing us to watch White Christmas every year has paid off! Please base future quizzes on Scrooged, Elf, and MERRY CHRISTMAS MOVIE HOUSE

    • I shall try, James – I haven’t had She & Him as an artist yet, perhaps a Zooey in Elf clue could work!

  14. jprobichaud permalink

    500. He was Mr. Christmas.

    • And Christmas around here generally involves a viewing of his signature film!

      • jprobichaud permalink

I think we all have that traditional Christmas that we like to watch every year. Mine is Bill Murray’s “Scrooged”.

  15. Sorry, I’m clueless on this one. Zero points for me, but thanks for the quiz Geoff!

  16. I’m on a roll of 500s, and it feels good!

  17. Holen permalink

400, 300 for last week, 500 for the week before.
