Supergrass – In It for the Money (1997)

Question: favourite album cover of the 90s?
One of the instantly identifiable (Nevermind, Very)? One of the self-titled AKAs (Weezer, Metallica)? Or perhaps, something more disturbing (RHCP, RATM)?
I might have to choose this sophomore Supergrass record.
They’re In It for the Money, bundled up & busking in the cold!
The cover humour is an indication of the good times that follow inside.
I’m hesitant to use the word ‘fun’ as it feels like I’m calling it diverting enough in the short term but easily dismissible. To rearrange a sentence à la Yoda, further from the truth that could not be.
The melodies are where they ought to be, front and center, and the arrangements have enough depth to make listen #10 just as enjoyable as listen #1.
One possible criticism might be that the album is missing the surefire hits of its predecessor and successor, I Should Coco and Supergrass. However, what it lacks in big singles it more than makes up for in terms of cohesion; this may be the band’s strongest set.
The individual tunes are no slouches of course: the title track and Cheapskate are just a couple of the high notes among the dozen tunes, a 12-pack seemingly devoid of any lows.
Further dissection adds little.
So go ahead: judge this book by its cover, and have some fun enjoying its contents too!

With the possible exception of their final album, Diamond hoo ha, which I still haven’t heard, there isn’t a bad one in the lot.
Definitely one of the more consistent groups in the last 20 years. Apparently Coco is 19 years old!
A lot of great albums are getting up there in age.

I love this Supergrass album, but then again I love all of them. Another great write-up and hopefully you’ve exposed it to some people who may not have been aware of it before. It definitely holds up as well as anything in their catalog.

Often records dubbed “fun” sort of seem more trivial with age but they seem to have found that nice balance of good times + durability
I have only heard this album, Coco, and Supergrass, but of these three albums, In It For The Money is definitely my favorite. All three albums are excellent-bordering-on-classic for me, but this one just has that something that draws me in a little more than the other two. The cover, as mentioned, doesn’t hurt the appeal either.
A pretty good career-opening trio of records by any yardstick!
A close call but probably my favourite Supergrass album. Richard III and Sun Hits The Sky are just so, so good! I never tire of listening to them.
