TLC – CrazySexyCool (1994)

Older movies are often enhanced when you unexpectedly see a familiar face in an early supporting role, such as Elijah Wood’s brief appearance playing video games in Back to the Future II.  When listening to the final track of CrazySexyCool, I did a double take when I realized it was Andre 3000 (credited as ‘Dre’ from Outkast) providing guest vocals!

Is it a guilty pleasure to enjoy TLC?  I’m afraid I’ll have to plead no contest.

I thought this would be one of those ‘pop’ records on here for its sizeable impact on pop culture.  Popular it was, but not nearly as easily dismissible as I expected.  The painfully simple trumpet hook on Creep is just one of the highlights.

Now it would be getting carried away to say it’s up there with some of Marvin Gaye’s early 70’s output, but it’s certainly worth a listen.

Besides, if you do, you’ll get more of the jokes from The Other Guys.

  1. I love this album. Way better then their first album. Red Light Special is really good. Creep is a great R&B song too. Their first album was the first CD I ever owned!

    • Agreed (though I did enjoy Baby, Baby, Baby & Ain’t to Proud to Beg from the first one) – and I have to give you credit for having the CD, I enjoyed listening to this one on cassette!
