Ryan Adams – Heartbreaker (2000)

December 11, 2012

[Album 123/1001]

Want to get my undivided attention?  Begin a record with a spoken dialogue, debating which Morrissey record(s) contained the song Suedehead.

Which helped me get over the fact that Ryan Adams is on here twice and one of my childhood heroes, Bryan Adams, is not so much as name-checked.  I recognize any possible minimal critical credibility is destroyed by confessing my love of Reckless.  Then again as Will Arnett’s delightfully tragic character G.O.B. implored on Arrested Development, Come On!

Ryan exceeded my expectations.  If the intro dialogue served as a great hook, the first song, To Be Young (is to be High), successfully reeled me in.  Throw in some beautiful backing vocals by Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris (among others), there is plenty to like.

Oh and to settle the debate between Ryan & David Rawlings: Suedehead appeared initially on Viva Hate and then was also included in the Bona Drag compilation.
