David Bowie – Hunky Dory (1971)
Hi there, Happy Saturday!
I’ve been reading Jian Ghomeshi’s 1982. Very few pages go by without a David Bowie reference. Further Bowie exploration quickly became inevitable.
Bowie is perhaps 2nd only to Bob Dylan when it comes to ‘singers that I love to attempt impressions of, much to the chagrin of those around me.’
I’m a fan. So was Morrissey it appears: Sheila Take A Bow’s “Throw your homework onto the fire” lyric was likely a nod to Bowie’s Kooks.
Whereas I spend a great deal of energy complaining about the overrepresentation of some artists on this list, I have no problem whatsoever with this being the 2nd of 7 Bowie albums that I’ll be reviewing. Especially if his other records turn out to be even half as strong as Hunky Dory, with songs approaching the outstanding-ness of Life On Mars.
To borrow the Jian sign-off, to be continued…
