“Geoff’s a total man of the ’90s”

July 5, 2019

Truer words were never spoken!

I found this edition of Sound Choice Magazine (the monthly mailing from BMG Music Service, one of the ‘buy 10 CDs for 1¢’ music clubs from the ’90s) in our basement.

Back in the day, I participated in the “club classix” contest & somewhere in the ballpark of 1996, my selections ended up on the back page of the issue.

That kid had some decent taste!

This basement discovery got me thinking, now that school’s officially out for summer, it’s time to get back on track with the 1001 albums project.

And being a total man of the 90s, I think I’ll spend the month of July listening to albums from my personal favourite musical decade.

Happy Summer!

Verbalize the Positive

I’m delighted that from my teenage list of BMG Music Service Recommendations, The Bends is still in my all-time top 5 & Everclear’s Heartspark Dollarsign/IME’s Another Sunday are still among my all-time favourite singles!

  1. This is tremendous. Mika had 4 of these and would have bought the IME album except her brother bought it first and her parents had a “no buying doubles” rule. She’s still mad even though she has it now.

    • My thanks James – and that’s a strict policy!
They say time heals all wounds, but 23 years may not be quite long enough yet, Scenery & Fish really is a keeper!

“John might be a total man of the 90s as well.”

    • It’s a great decade of which to be a total man!

That sentence was very well constructed grammatically.

      • Full credit to the Will Forte show, Last Man on Earth. Kristen Schaal’s character always had great lines with ‘of which’ placed in grammatically correct places!

Kristen Schaal is the best! Loved her in Flight of the Conchords

  3. A Sarah McLachlan fan, a total man of the 1990s, and a metal-head walk into a bar……

  4. This could be ads for Lilith Fair. Edgefest and Heavy Montreal.

In music videos and on Club Classix..Can I have your autograph?

    • Haha – can you guess which of the 3 shows I went to?!
I’m not sure what it’s called now but I remember enjoying those Edgefests at Molson Park in Barrie – and I’ll be seeing Blue Rodeo again this summer at the venue formerly known as the Molson Amphitheatre!

      • We should both be getting royalty cheques from Molson for all those years of support

      • Though admittedly, I haven’t really supported their product – more their sponsored concert venues / hockey broadcasts!

  5. Brilliant Stuff!
A pretty neat little writeup of each album Sir!
    School’s Out for Recess!
    Enjoy Dude!
I think if anything you should bring back the haircut as well if you’re going to be digging in the Stephen Musical Vaults from yesteryear!

    • Haha – the mushroom/under cut lasted much longer than it should have!
Though I still have a plain blue golf shirt (and still like all 6 of these artists), so it looks like the haircut may have been the only thing to go!

      • It’s hard to believe that IME came out so long ago! I think they are due for a new studio album with Edwin!
With new haircuts as well mind u!

  6. I dug me some Everclear as well. Great stuff and nice piece of history!!

  7. Love the post (even though I don’t know the music!).

  8. Tremendous stuff. I had a chart published in Kerrrang! once, I’ll have to see if I can drag it out.

  9. Amazing! Three of those albums were in my CD racks when I was a teen – Bush, Radiohead, Moist… and my brother had the Everclear album.

… and I’m a total man of the 90’s, too!

    • I’m delighted that Moist made it into the CD collection! They’re playing a free outdoor show in Kingston in a few weeks, I’m looking forward to it.
And it’s good to be in good 90s company!

      • I didn’t realise they were still on the go, but don’t be too delighted, as that CD did gather a lot of dust once I realised that I wasn’t too fond of it!

      • Not to worry J – I’m just pleased a copy made it to Scotland!

  10. Ah, man. That’s the haircut I wanted but could never pull off.
