The Sabres of Paradise – Haunted Dancehall (1994)

February 2, 2021

[Album 849/1001]

“I’m gonna dance all Dance Hall everyday.
I’m gonna dance all Dance Hall every day.
I’m gonna dance all Dance Hall every day…”
– Modest Mouse, Dance Hall

Big Modest Mouse fan, somewhat less of a fan of their tune Dance Hall.

But what of The Sabres of Paradise & their album, Haunted Dancehall?

Upon listening, would I be inspired to dance all (Haunted) Dancehall every day?

Well, not exactly.

Frankly, at a running time of almost 77 minutes, who has the time?

However, the title track represents a relative high point.

Making it a standout on an album that would otherwise not typically be categorized as ‘my cuppa.’

And seeing as Dance Hall (by Modest Mouse) would be a relative low point on an album firmly placed in the ‘my cuppa’ category, this calls for a graph!

…..

Verbalize the Positive

Rhetorical question: the opening tracks leading into Dance Hall on Good News for People Who Love Bad News, how great are they?!

  1. Man, this one doesn’t ring a bell either.

  2. I refreshed the page – there’s the graph! Man, I never heard of this one, and it’s on the 1001 albums? I am learning new things!

  3. I couldn’t even answer your rhetorical question if I wanted.

Sabres of Paradise? Not a great moniker either, if you ask me…

  5. I remember this being a big LP (and a long one), Danny Sabre was a very in demand producer in all sorts of dance stuff and this LP was more about soundscapes. Since I lost my taped copy about 24 years ago that’s all I’ve got.

  6. Why hasn’t someone named their album ‘My Cuppa’ yet?

  7. Dunno anything about this, GS. But for some reason, the picture reminded me of the classic philosophical graph “Duck and Rabbit”. Should I talk to a health professional about this?

    • I hadn’t looked at it closely – I imagine that it could be one of those multiple images for the price of 1, but I can’t really tell what it is from any angle!

  8. 77 mins. Yeah, I just listened to an Allman Bros album that was 75 mins. Too long for any album!
