Ready for Quiz #50?

This is how we feel!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Artist of the Week #50
Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

For:

500 points…………………American band, formed in 1992.

Some of their non-self-titled album names include Maladroit, Make Believe, Pacific Daydream, and (arguably the 4th greatest album of all-time)…

.

.

.

.

.

400 points…………………Pinkerton.

They also have a wide variety of Gene picks self-titled albums, such as the red / green / white / teal / black albums.

A couple of their finest tunes, in photo puzzle form:

.

.

.

.

.

300 points……………………On the 4th track of their ‘blue’ 1994 album (incidentally, considered by some to be the 2nd greatest of all-time), lead singer Rivers Cuomo provided a memorable lesson in similes & metaphors, as shown below:

.

.

.

.

.

200 points………………..The band name rhymes with slang for an older person.

Their iconic symbol is below, using only equal signs & slashes!

.

.

.

.

.

100 points………………..The artist is =w=_________

.

.

.

.

.

Answer: Could not find a suitable Arabic translation (though I thought the suggestions of ‘phaser’ and ‘weiser’ were moderately amusing!) – instead, look up ‘Rivers Cuomo’s band’

(Please post your points earned in the comments section)

Thanks for playing!

  1. 500! You hit the obscure titles for the first clue though.

500! I still fondly remember seeing them open for Lush back in 1994.

    • Well done, JP – both on the score & seeing them as an opening act!

      • jprobichaud permalink

Yeah, that was a long time ago. I saw them as a festival headliner many years later and it was a very different show.

  3. Once I scored 200 it all became so obvious.

  4. My music knowledge still isn’t there yet (0 points)! If it was bands like One Direction and Backstreet Boys, I would’ve got it lol!

    • I’ll see if I can fit them in next year, Lana!

      • Oh you don’t have to Geoff, I love that I’m learning about artists I didn’t grow up with! These quizzes are fun either way.

  5. Harrison permalink

    Not a clue, I’m afraid.

  6. 500 for me. I can’t believe it. I had only one guess at that clue, and confirmed it with the next two clues I was right. That counts right?? 🙂

  7. 500! Fortunately I find their colorful discovery very fascinating. And that is all she wrote!

  8. 500 points that I found ‘In My Garage’

    • You’ve got Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, and a Perfect Score waiting there for you, Deke!

      • Congrats on another stellar season on the quiz Geoff. I’m hoping for a final Top 20 placing!

  9. 400 for this week.

  10. 500 to wrap up the year! I had just found Maladroit at the mission thrift a few weeks ago for $2! Thanks for the quizzes all year, Geoff!

    • $2 for Maladroit is a toonie well spent!
Some strong guitar work on that album – I particularly like 7-8-9 stretch of burndt jamb/space rock/slave. In a Baseball batting order, that’s usually where you hide the weaker hitters, not the case here!

      • Kelly Gruber is still my favorite #7 hitter of all time.

      • And when he left, Tony Fernandez ended up in the #7 slot – they were so ridiculously deep, they had a .300 hitter that late in the lineup!

      • Remember WAMCO? Then Henderson joined the team and they became HAMCOW.

      • And because of the no DH rule in the NL, there wasn’t enough room in game 3 vs. the Phillies for Olereud, the AL Batting Average leader – just ridiculous how strong they were!

      • Well, Cito favored the vets a little too much. O should have been in the lineup over Maldanado in ’92. Carter had no buisness being at first. I like it better in ’93 when they had Molitor playing 3rd and sat Sprague. But, the won so no one cares how stubborn Cito was, lol.

      • Perhaps Olereud wouldn’t have jumped quite as high as Joe though after recording that last out!

      • Of course not! It was all meant to be. The team was better than Cito’s crazy!

  11. Zack permalink

    500!

  12. 500! Thanks for another fab year of music quizzes!

  13. For the last time this year, 500 each for me and Mika.

  14. 500 points. Excellent clues. After a few weeks of hitting 200s and 300s I finally got back to a max 🙂
Top work on hosting this quiz. I managed to stay in the top 20 all year so far with a highest place 13th at one point I believe. Many thanks 🙂

  15. What’s with these homies Dissin’ my 500 points?

  16. 500 please Geoff. Let’s hear it for that Nerf Herder song celebrating their tour with them.

  17. Add me to the 500 ranks!
