Undertones – Hypnotised (1980)

November 26, 2020

[Album 810/1001]

“Biggie Biggie Biggie can’t you see
Sometimes your words just hypnotize me
And I just love your flashy ways
Guess that’s why they broke, and you’re so paid (uh)”
– The Notorious B.I.G. , Hypnotize

Would this album art count as flashy ways?

They appear to be all set to enjoy some lobster & have some drinks in fancy stemware…yet the bibs don’t exactly scream haute couture & the glasses appear to contain water!

So are they broke or so paid?

To borrow a Ted Danson line from S2E12 of The Good Place, It’s Unclear.

But as for the music on the second album by The Undertones, its hypnotizing quality doesn’t come from any flashiness.

Instead, it’s the simple & energetic arrangements that make it work wonders.

There are nods to music that came before (My Perfect Cousin doesn’t appear to be too distant a relative to The Kinks‘ &/or The Jam‘s version of David Watts) and songs like Boys Will Be Boys set the path for subsequent artists to follow (such as The Libertines or The Ordinary Boys).

I find that I’m unreliable when it comes to assigning numeric scores to albums; depending on listening context, a 9/10 one day may feel too low or too high on another.

So instead, I tend to think about the probability of revisiting albums & artists.

What are the odds I’ll feel like listening to this again?

To borrow one of The Undertones’ songs from Hypnotised, Nine Times Out of Ten, I’d gladly be back!

Verbalize the Positive

The Good Place, a really well-crafted show from start to finish!

From → 1980s

  1. John Peel’s favourite band!

  2. I loved the Good Place. I just binged about 6 months back. Ted Danson was absolutely amazing in it.

    • Hear hear, John – the whole ensemble was excellent, but Michael the Architect was my favourite!

  3. I bought an Undertones compilation in Taranna one time, haven’t tried any albums proper. Bad music fan, bad! Haha

    • Not to worry, Aaron – I’ve only heard 2 albums, so I wouldn’t say I qualify as a good music fan, good, either!

      • You’re a good music fan, Geoff, and don’t let anyone tell you any different!

  4. I keep meaning to give The Good Place a try. I’m so behind on my TV shows as I watch way too many movies, lol.

    • It’s impossible to keep up with all the content – but in the case of the good place, it’s well worth the time investment & in terms of juicy stats, the 4 seasons would be a grand slam!

  5. One of my favourite bands ever – great LP this one too, worth it just for the self-deprecating ‘More Songs About Chocolate & Girls’.
