Ready for Quiz #42?

It’s tricky!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Artist of the Week #42
Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

For:

500 points…………………American group, from Hollis, Queens, New York, formed in 1983. They have a pair of hip hop albums on the 1001 list: their self-titled 1984 debut & their 1986 album, Raising Hell

.

.

.

.

.

400 points…………………The group was comprised of Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell.

Their tune, Christmas in Hollis, was also featured in the opening credits to the film, Die Hard (as shown below)

Untitled presentation (47)

.

.

.

.

.

300 points……………………This group‘s 1986 cover of an Aerosmith tune (featuring the original songwriters, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry) is considered an important moment in the creation of the genre, rap rock.

And as my friend Mark B correctly pointed out, it’s difficult to walk through the halls of a school these days without getting the song stuck in your head!

.

.

.

.

.

200 points………………..2-part band name:

– the first part would be faster than a jog (but slower than a sprint)

– the second part features 3 initials (and would be the same as the seemingly humorless place of employment for Patty & Selma, if the acronym was for ‘cars’ rather than ‘vehicles’)

.

.

.

.

.

100 points………………..The artist is R___ (4th letter) (13th letter) (3rd letter)

.

.

Answer: تشغيل دي م البحر

(Please post your points earned in the comments section)

Thanks for playing!

  1. 500! I find them pretty thin sounding on retrospect but great rappers.

  2. jprobichaud permalink

500 but it was a super lucky guess. The next clue confirmed it for me. I still clearly remember the laceless adidas sneakers they wore in the video with Aerosmith.

  3. 300 because I scrolled too fast and thats the blue I ended up on, a case of scroll this way I guess

  4. 300, perhaps not my strongest point this week!

  5. 500 for me! I can’t believe I knew this one. I probably know 3 hip hop bands and I actually own something by them.

  6. Lucky guess for 500.

  7. 500 please for The Kings

  8. Harrison permalink

500 please, and only because I get this whenever I search for the Maiden live album without quantifying the band name

  9. 500 because I’ve never heard of Hollis but I have heard of Raising Hell.

  10. Zack permalink

    500.

  11. 500! I owe it all to the opening line in their Christmas song.

  12. 500. I still get sad about the murder from time to time.

    • And I only learned of the murder recently – I understand 2 people were indicted for it this summer, 18 years later

      • I didn’t know that. It was linked to a beef over 50 Cent, I believe.

  13. 100. Thanks for all the word help.

  14. 500 as Lexie’s boyfriend was playing this at our house last night. Mitch is a huge hip hop fan so I was tossing old names his way and he was loading them up on his Spotify!
    Perfect timing!

  15. 500! All thanks to their Christmas song!

  16. Me and Mika are down with the kiiiiiiiiings – 500 each.

  17. The 500 points run continues 🙂 Was calling it on the bonus clue and knew it on the first.
