Ready for Quiz #38?

There’s No Other Way!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

Record POINTS Earned (Not Artist Name) in the comments
(scroll down for additional clues)

For:

500 points…………………British band, formed in London in the late 1980s. They hit their commercial peak, selling millions of albums to Girls & Boys worldwide, in the mid-90s ‘Britpop’ era.

Impressively, despite a couple of hiatuses and a brief early 2000s window as a 3-piece, the band lineup has been consistent: drummer Dave Rowntree, bassist Alex James, guitarist Graham Coxon…

.

.

.

.

.

400 points…………………and singer Damon Albarn (who in addition to being the lead vocalist for this group, also provides vocals for the virtual band, Gorillaz)

.

.

.

.

.

300 points……………………They have a trio of albums on the 1001 list: Modern Life is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994), and their 1997 self-titled / lo-fi masterpiece (featuring the inescapable-at-the-time Song 2). Woo hoo indeed!

.

.

.

.

.

200 points………………..The fittingly-named effect used on this photo of the band, to render it unclear!

  1. Love the photo.

  2. 500 by accident

  3. 500. Lots of info in that first clue!

  4. Modern life is rubbish but 500 points isn’t too shabby.

    • What are the lyrics to that song again, Woo Hoo, When I feel Heavy Metal (Overload getting 500 points is not too shabby), Woo Hoo!

  5. 100 for me. No idea. I think I know the song, but not one single other thing about this band.

  6. The first clue stumped me but the second I got as Rolling Stone Magazine were all over over these guys and Oasis in the mid to late 90s. At the time I was a subscriber to R.S
I have to admit that clue for 200 was brilliant Geoff
Also can we recheck Ladano’s score as I think something funny is going on here? Might have to call in Dick Pound to look at Mike’s totals. lol

    • Absolutely – if the beatles vs. stones was the debate of the 60s, (this artist) vs. oasis was the 90s Britpop version!
And I’m optimistic there are no quiz performance enhancing products at play, I believe LeBrain is LeGit!

You were right. I knew who this before I even got to the first clue. The bonus one at the beginning tipped me off. This has been and still is one of my all time faves and yeah, “The universal” is brilliant. All their ballads are. Oh, mark me down for 500, please.

    • I was going to say, I was planning on just putting in the 500 before even reading the comment!

      • jprobichaud permalink

It’s nice to know you have that kind of faith in me.

  8. Zack permalink

It was on the tip of my tongue but I wasn’t sure until 400.

  9. Finally back on the 500 train! A good thing Boys and Girls was played everywhere when I was in college because it would have been another 200 this week.

  10. I’ll take a 200 this week.

  11. 500 each for me and Mika.

  12. 200 for me.

  13. Love the out of focus photo clue. Love this band. 500 points.

  14. 500! I have always loved this band — Pulp are probably my favourite from that area, but these are a close second!

    • I’m pleased you choose Pulp as your #1, Adela – it’s like the beatles vs. stones, some choose kinks, in oasis vs. this week’s artist, the correct answer may be Pulp!

  15. Harrison permalink

    100 please

  16. 500. Woo-hoo!!
