Throwing Muses – Throwing Muses (1986)

August 28, 2020

[Album 794/1001]

Have you ever accidentally listened to the ‘wrong’ self-titled album?

For example, when intending to check out weezer’s 1994 self-titled ‘blue’ debut, did you unwittingly listen to their self-titled green / red / white / teal / black albums instead?

So there I was, listening to Throwing Muses by Throwing Muses, remarking on how remarkably well tracks like the 4th track, Pandora’s Box, stand up.ThrowingMusesUntitled

A couple of spins later…I realized I had been listening to their eponymous 2003 album, rather than their 1001-listed 1986 album of the same name!

But unlike opening Pandora’s Box, this was no curse.

In fact, it ended up being a bit of a blessing in disguise as this week, I’ve been enjoying the 1986 version of Throwing Muses by Throwing Muses.

And as luck would have it, their self-titled debut album also stands up remarkably well, particularly the 4th track, Vicky’s Box.

So as long as there is ‘Throwing Muses’ in both the album + the band name, and there’s a ‘Box‘ of some sort featured in track 4, you’re all set!

The penultimate tune here is named, Soul Soldier.

And I was reminded of one of the best song lyric graphs I’ve seen (as shown below, for The Killers’ tune, All These Things That I’ve Done).

My only wish? That I’d thought of it first!

  1. I don’t know this band much, which is weird as I generally like indie and like The Breeders and Kristin Hersh solo.

  2. I don’t know Throwing Muses, but I know The Killers and that song in particular is great!! But the graph is the best thing of them all!!

  3. I don’t know if I have ever mixed up self-titled albums but I remember Led Zeppelin was confusing to get into because it seemed like all of their albums were titled Led Zeppelin.

Back in the day, I never gave this band its due. Coincidentally, though, I checked out one of their albums and now I want more!

  5. Well I do know for a fact that the Weezer blue album is the debut. Case in point I bought the Blue debut in 94 on CD and in August 2020 I upgraded to the debut on Vinyl!
Plus its the only Weezer I have ever owned! lol
One of my all time favs Geoff. Not bad for an old 80s metalhead eh?

  6. I find this lot difficult. I know they’re good, I can tell that, but it just doesn’t reach me at all – I am happy to accept that as my own deficiency.

    • I’ve had that feeling as well – those are the artists I tend to appreciate, yet others enjoy more than I seem to!
