Ready for Quiz #33?
If not, I guess it’s fun to lose & to pretend?!
.
Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)
Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.
Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.
After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.
Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.
I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.
In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.
In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.
Here goes!

For:
500 points…………………American band, formed in Aberdeen, Washington in the late ’80s. If Seinfeld dubbed José Carreras, “the other guy” in The Three Tenors, this group’s co-founding bassist Krist Novoselic might be the ultimate “other guy” in rock…
.
.
.
.
.
400 points…………………mostly because this trio‘s drummer (Dave Grohl) would go on to form Foo Fighters…

Verbalize the Positive
I enjoy unintended google translate results.
This band’s name, as translated back & forth between English & Arabic?
“The Spirit of Serenity” – speaking of Seinfeld, Serenity Now!
So when I added ‘band’ to the name?
_________ Squad, and that’s what I kept!

500 points
Well done, pulamusic!
500. Glad you put the bass player’s name, because I wouldn’t have got it from Aberdeen, even though I should have.
I always like to shine a light on ‘the other guy(s)’ in bands!
He’s had some pretty weird conspiracy theories lately though.
500 for me too. I actually knew all of their names, despite not being the huge-est fan of the band. I certainly remember when “that song” came out and blew ‘alternative’ into the mainstream though…
The first time I remember seeing it was on the ‘Best of 1992 Coca-Cola Countdown’ show – so I was a bit late to the party!
…At least you got to the party.
500 points and this band haunted me for the longest time for the strangest reasons.
Excellent score & intriguing comment, Neil!
500, and pleased I got it at Aberdeen even before ‘the other guy’ bit 🙂 What a band for its time! Funny seeing kids wearing their t-shirts today when I still have my original ‘fudge packing’ tee from back in the day. I regret I never saw them live when I had the chance… oh well.
Excellent work, TVTA – both on the score & the t-shirt!
Thanks. It’s one heck of a tee. I stopped wearing it a long time ago so as to preserve it. Also have an original Nevermind poster which has so far stood the test of time.
I just watched the movie ‘Tag’ – in the childhood basement of one of the characters, it was nice to see a Nevermind poster still hanging on the wall!
Nicely spotted! Good to see the placement of some 90s pop culture in film.
NO GROHL. But… 500 points anyway.
I put him as the 400 clue – hoping you’d get the 500 and wouldn’t have to see the picture!
500! I’m so much better at this with punk bands.
I had a feeling you’d be back to 500 this week, Zack!
500 for me and it is amazing how much I know for a band I really don’t like.
Those are good weeks, John – when you haven’t spent a ton of time listening yet somehow still absorbed enough trivia about them to earn a perfect score!
500 grungy points Geoff! I will gladly take.
500 tattered cardigans it is, Deke!
500! And, the other guy…
Nifty work, Kevin!
500!
Nice work, Sarca!
I’ll take 500 this week.
Excellent work, D!
400.
Well done, Amrita!
500 each for me and Mika.
Well played, Mika & James!
400 please
You didn’t know Novoselic was in Shitvana?
Nice work, Harrison!
500 for my most hated band ever.
Bonus that even though they were despised, you still earned a perfect score!
500 for me please. They were quite good.
Nice work, Joe!
500 “tattered cardigans” or me! I went through a bit of a Nirvana phase like many other disaffected preteens, I think…
(Your comment reminded me of when Kurt Cobain’s MTV cardigan was auctioned off for a very large amount of money — stains, cigarette burns, and all!)
I can imagine that sweater would have sold for a fortune!
Gee I wonder… 500!
Good job recognizing the other guy in the group!
Well he’s, like, 7′ tall or something, stands out like a sore thumb!
