The Adverts – Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts (1978)

July 21, 2020

[Album 787/1001]

You’re about to watch a YouTube video.

Before the video loads, an ad appears on screen.

In the bottom right corner, there is an option to ‘Skip ad.’

Has anyone ever Not skipped the ad?

.

From a marketing perspective, I appreciate the challenge behind the medium of television commercials.

You’ve got a short window of time to tell a story & to inspire the viewer to take action.

Keeping in mind, the viewer didn’t choose to hear your story, and may find your advertisement intrusive.

If given the choice, they’d likely choose to watch something else, so you have to hook them right away, immediately convincing them to stay tuned.

And, to top it off, they are bombarded by hundreds of ads, so you’ve got to find a way to stand out.220px-Adverts_-_Crossing_The_Red_Sea_With_The_Adverts_album_cover

With Crossing the Red Sea with The Adverts, The Adverts do a good job of getting & maintaining listener attention.

Though their running time is about 30 minutes (rather than 30 seconds), there’s still an efficiency to the tunes and nothing outstays its welcome.

Even though I ‘have’ to listen to it (as one of the 1001 albums that I have been advised to hear before departing earth), it didn’t feel like an arduous task.

It’s energetic, but not intrusive.

And whereas most adverts become annoying upon repeated viewings/listens, these Adverts get better with each spin.

I wouldn’t skip this.

John Leckie, the producer here, has quite the impressive production CV/Resume!

  1. Those YouTube adds are annoying but I get it and as the skip is featured it’s a skip asap lol
    30 minute albums are awesome!
I remember back in high school getting both VH Fair Warning and Diver Down on a 60 minute blank tape for TBone so he could crank it in his car when he hit 16
Later in 84 when Maiden put out Powerslave I told TBone u might want to buy it as it was pushing a hour anyway lol

  2. So unaware of this band I don’t even know what genre they are – assuming either ska or punk from the name….

    • I think they’d be under the ‘punk’ umbrella – perhaps a sub-category I’m not familiar with. I know Metal has an impressive flow chart to organize all its sub-genres!

  3. No, I hit skip as fast as my fat fingers can click that mouse. But this sounds like something I would let play out and at 30 minutes, not a lot of time invested…even better.

    • I can’t think of a time, when given the option of skipping, that I did not skip – it’s tough to envision a pre-video youtube ad that would be considered un-skippable!

  4. One of my very favourite UK punk albums ever. Such a blast of a band and i like that they didn’t hang around for too long afterwards too. They did what they had to and split. I admire bands who manage that.

    • There’s definitely something to be said for that – I remember liking a line in the Dark Knight, you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain. And so for the bands that quit before recording an ill-advised or irrelevant album, I too admire that!
