Nanci Griffith – The Last of the True Believers (1986)

April 17, 2020

[Album 753/1001]

“Oh, I never put a chain upon your heart or tried to make you walk the line for me
Only a fool would want a heart that needs a chain to keep it resting here beside of me”
Nanci Griffith, Fly By Night

By my rigorous / entirely self-imposed 1001-list rules, I am somewhat chained to these albums for a minimum of 2 complete listens.

After the 2 requisite listens, however, I have no obligation to revisit.NanciGriffithTheLastoftheTrueBelievers

Though certain artists tend to keep me coming back.

With Nanci Griffith’s The Last of the True Believers, it’s clear that she’s no fool; she instantly won my heart through her tremendous songwriting.

I wouldn’t say she’s the last of the great songwriters but she has that talent for quickly creating vivid scenes & characters.

And her songs are equally, if not more, interesting upon repeated (recreational well beyond the requisite) listens.

Despite being released in 1986, her sound reminds me of a lot of my favourite music from the 2000s (Emmylou Harris’ Red Dirt Girl, Gillian Welch’s Time (The Revelator), Dixie Chicks’ version of Landslide, Good Lovelies’ Down Down Down…).

As for the album overall?

Like the male guest musician, Lyle, featured dancing on the album’s cover:

I Lovett!

The Grad Club @ Queens University does a trivia night on Thursdays.

And in this current era, they’ve kept the trivia going, but online & on the campus radio station, CFRC 101.9 f.m.

We put together a team last night via zoom & I’m pleased to report that our team placed 2nd in the music round with a 47/48.

If you knew that Tammi Terrell sang Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, we could have used you on the team!

Never heard this one (or even heard of it) before. Worth a spin?

    • It was new-to-me too – if you like early 2000s Emmylou Harris / Gillian Welch, then for sure!

  2. You compare Nanci to the Dixie Chicks and Klosterman compared the Dixie Chicks to Van Halen! lol

I look forward to see what the Stephens have up there sleeve tonight for the frontline workers!

  3. I’ve never heard this either, but I’m sure I’d like it. Been on a bit of a country kick lately.
