The Saints – Eternally Yours (1978)

March 11, 2020

[Album 735/1001]

In my high school marketing class, we talk about the “4 Ps” of the Marketing Mix:

1. Product
2. Price
3. Placement
4. Promotion

So I was delighted to see that the opening track here was named, Know Your Product.

If you’re going to communicate effectively with your target audience, first off, you’ve gotEternally to know what you’re trying to sell.

And I gather that audiences in 1978 were a bit baffled by what The Saints were selling here.

Why is there a horn section? There aren’t supposed to be horns in punk rock!

Though, ironically, shouldn’t that be considered the ultimate punk move, to not conform to conventional band structures?

In any event, it’s admirable that they knew what they wanted to do & recorded the album they wanted to record.

Will this Australian band be, as promised in the title, eternally in my listening rotation?

To paraphrase a fellow Australian’s hit (also from 1978), will I be Hopelessly Devoted to them?

Now that I’ve streamed the album, would I physically buy what The Saints are selling?

I’d say, if I find this Product as a second-hand LP, at an agreeable Price, in a local record shop Placement, ideally as a part of an in-store Promotion…I could be persuaded!

Verbalize the Positive

Kudos to the Saints for adding horns to the mix.

As much as like the early Arkells recordings (with a bigger emphasis on guitars), their recent tours featuring the Northern Soul Horns have been outstanding!

  1. This POST was PRICELESS in regards to the fact that your PROMOTION of the Saints has a PLACEMENT on your shelf at home!

How did I do Mr. Stephen? haha

    • I’d give that an ‘A’ PLUS, Deke!

      • Thanks Geoff!
You could have taken the next three weeks to Grade my assignment! lol
Enjoy your March break and beyond!

      • You as well Geoff I’m off til Wednesday than its back to work. Sue like yourself is off for 3 weeks. I think the happiest at that news is Izzy and Fender as they don’t have to be in the kennels during the day! haha

      • I bet they’ll be loving all the bonus walks!

      • Yeah for sure. At least you can still go outside!

  2. That was a lot of P’s…preposterous!!!

I’ll add another P to the mix: Horns are always a Phenomenal addition to any sound.

  4. As Paul McCartney once said: Let it Pee.
