Ready for Quiz #36?

Thought I heard you talking softly!

.

Quiz Rules/Format
(Same as last year, feel free to skip to the quiz if you know the rules already)

Your Task: Name the mystery Artist, ideally with as few clues as possible.

Correctly guess the artist on the first clue? 500 points.

After scrolling down to the second clue? 400 points.

Still don’t know after the fifth clue? 0 points, but a crisp high-five for participating.

I’ll use google translate to put the correct answer at the bottom in Arabic (if you read Arabic, that’s fantastic, but no cheating by reading ahead!) and you can translate it back to the language of your choice to confirm your answer.

In the comments, please enter your POINTS earned (not the artist name) and I’ll keep track of the running totals in a spreadsheet.

In addition to eternal bragging rights, the winner at the end of the year may even get something as prestigious as a digital certificate.

Here goes!

For:

500 points………………..English band, formed in Birmingham in 1978. Impressively, at one point in the 1980s, the band lineup included a trio of Taylors (Andy, John, and Roger), none of whom were related.

.

400 points……………….Their 1982 album, Rio, is on the 1001 list, featuring the title track, Save a Prayer, and…

.

200 points………………..Along with Talk Talk and The The, this group might have my favourite repeated band name in music (it’s almost the same name as the NBA star Kevin _______ who injured his achilles in the NBA finals vs. Toronto)

Without a trace of irony, I adore their tune, Ordinary World – my 2nd favourite ever descending yet uplifiting guitar melody!

  1. 500. Easy to get confused with Queen drummer of the same name.

  2. 500 and I am somewhat ashamed, not really.

    • No need to be – my only disappointment is that the band was never entirely comprised of unrelated Taylors!

  3. 500. At the height of their fame the office of central statistics admitted that 84.6% of all girls I liked, fancied their bass player. He’s been a right drag on me that bloke.

  4. 500 please.

  5. Harrison permalink

    300 please

  6. 500 for me again…two weeks in a row. I am on a hot streak.

    • Well done, Sarca – I think I remember you reading a book by the bass player? The reading paid off!

      • Big time fan! And yes, I did read that book. Quite good!

  7. Read the memoir of one of them a couple of years back. It was OK-ish.
    Hungry for 500.

    • I remember seeing the bassist’s memoir in a clearance sale for $2 – if the book was OK-ish, for $2, that’s probably about the expected return on investment!

  8. I’ll take another 200.

500 for me. I had a few friends that might’ve been obsessed with this band back in the day. Love the 200 hint, by the way.

    • My thanks – it might have been the #shethenorth yesterday that reminded me of the Raptors finals!

  10. Going to take my 500 points and cash em out in Rio!
Back 2 Back 500 point weeks!
I’m getting nervous about next week! ha

  11. 500! That 200 points clue though, lol!

  12. Zack permalink

    300.

  13. Do I get 600 points for guessing before you explained the quiz format? They performed for the moon landing anniversary celebration recently and also represented England when they hosted the Olympics in 2012. Not too shabby for a band people thought were relevant in 1983 and that too for being popular among young girls.

    • It feels like there should be bonus points!
I’m delighted you spotted my extra clue Amrita (and even more pleased that was all it took to know the artist) – I think this may have actually been the first artist we ever discussed, a few years back!

      • Really? I thought it was Kate Bush! I do find today’s artists immensely interesting (and understand their divisiveness) for various reasons. They were the first mainstream artists to release their new album on the internet before it hit the record stores!

  14. As a fellow Brummie and having once met one of those Taylors at our local recording studio (ditto for Black Sabbath for the quiz a few months back), this was an easy 500 points please Stephen 🙂

  15. 500 for Mika, 400 for me.
