Blog Dylan: Top 5 Namechecks

December 16, 2017

Version 2

A Community Collaboration hosted by Danica @ Living a Beautiful Life
Exemplary Blog Dylan Banner by Bruce @ Vinyl Connection

A Top 5 Dylan tunes?

Or a Top 5 Zimmerman albums?

To quote Wallace Shawn from The Princess Bride, that would be absolutely, totally, and in all other ways, inconceivable!

But a Top 5 Dylan namechecks in songs by other artists?

Somewhat more conceivable, enjoy!

5. John Lennon, Give Peace a Chance
“Ev’rybody’s talking about John and Yoko, Timmy Leary, Rosemary,
Tommy Smothers, Bobby Dylan”

4. Beastie Boys, 3 Minute Rule
“A lot of parents like to think I’m a villain, I’m just chillin’, like Bob Dylan”

3. Hootie & The Blowfish, Only Wanna be with You
With bonus marks for dissecting the lyrics to Idiot Wind!
“Put on a little Dylan sitting on a fence

I say that line is great, you ask me what I meant by
Said, I shot a man named Gray, took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me
I can’t help it if I’m lucky”

2. Belle & Sebastian, Like Dylan in the Movies
Additional credit for including his last name in the title
“If they follow you, Don’t look back, Like Dylan in the movies”

1. David Bowie, Song for Bob Dylan
For name-checking his birth name, Bowie wins!
“Oh, hear this Robert Zimmerman, I wrote a song for you”

  1. You’ve been added to the Blog Dylan page!

  2. A creative take on Blog Dylan! My favorite would have to be the Beastie Boys.

  3. Zack permalink

I really like the Counting Crows: ‘I wanna be Bob Dylan, Mr Jones wishes he was someone a little more funky.’

    • Zack – I can’t believe I forgot that one!
It would easily be my #2, if not #1, I may have to do a Vol. II at some point to include all the ones I didn’t know/foolishly forgot!

  4. I also like John Lennon’s “God,” in which he references every one from Buddha to The Beatles themselves, while also including Mr. Dylan (“I don’t believe in Zimmerman”)

  5. John Stephen permalink

I first thought of Paul Simon’s ” A Simple Desultory Philippic” on Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme, This Dylanesque rant includes:

    He doesn’t dig poetry
He’s so unhip that when you say Dylan
He thinks you’re talking about Dylan Thomas
    Whoever he was
The man ain’t got no culture

  6. Sooo enjoyed this. Never thought about Dylan making ‘guest appearances’ in others’ songs before. But what a great test of immortality.
    Thanks Geoff!

    • Much appreciated Bruce – I think he’s right up there in terms of the # of albums by any 1 artist on the 1001 list. And now I’m realizing he’s possibly the #1 name-checked by others artist too!

  7. Nice angle on this post….

    As always Geoff well done….

    • Cheers Deke – nice win by the Rangers this afternoon!

      • YES….Did you see Grabner’s goal? Check it out!

      • Just watched it – I’m sure they diagrammed that one, looked like a set play to bank it off Rask!

      • HAHAHA…proves the old point…Shoot at the never know will the Bounce will go and in this case off of Rask’s rear end

  8. Nice one, Geoff. I think I’d have Counting Crows’ Mr. Jones in there. Maybe even Bob Dylan himself? Does saying I an awfy lot in Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream count?

If not, Minutemen’s Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs has got to be a clear contender for number 1! 😃

    • I can’t believe I forgot the Counting Crows!
I hadn’t considered the self-name-check, I suppose it would still be eligible?! And with a title like that, I’ve got to check out that Minutemen track!

      • Perhaps the Counting Crows was almost too familiar? Sometimes obvious stuff slips my mind.

      • I think that’s likely what happened!

  9. Great idea Geoff!

You missed out Sex Pistols ‘Great Rock and Roll Swindle’:

‘Bob Dylan got a parking ticket stuck to his arsehole’

    • My thanks Joe – I quite like the name of that tune, but what an unfortunate place to be issued a parking citation!

      • (Makes Blowin in the Wind joke – details to be filled in later)

      • I misread ‘filled’ as ‘filed’ – as in joke to be filed away for future use. So I ended up enjoying the comment twice as ‘filled’!

  10. Syd Barrett Bob Dylan Blues.

Awesome representation on the Blog Dylan

    • Cheers Brian – and I now think a top 5 is insufficient, I hadn’t realized how many songs even had his name in the title, let alone as a name-check in the lyrics!

  11. Great approach to Dylan here, Geoff, and an absolutely perfect choice for #1.

  12. Alright, this is a FANTASTIC idea for a post. Way to come at us with originality, Geoff!

  13. You always have the best ideas.
