Good one Geoff! I’m trying to think of metal examples but I’m coming up blank.
I’m sure they give their home countries a shout-out at some point – I may find out on my tour here!
‘It’s a Norway to the top (if you wanna rock and roll)’ by AC/DC.
I must be missing that rare remix.
I believe it was the B-side to Helsinki’s Bells!
HAHAHA drumroll for this guy!
Your Scandinavian links reminded me of my favourite bunch of xenophobes, The Stranglers.
As well as pissing off Americans with “Dead Loss Angeles”, Iran with “Shah Shah A Go Go”, Australians “Nuclear Device” and causing riots in the streets of France “Nice In Nice”, they incurred the wrath of Sweden with the song “Sweden, All Quiet On The Eastern Front”.
With opening line “Let me tell you about Sweden, only country where the clouds are interesting” things got even worse when they decided to re-record the song in Swedish.
So not so good at making international friends then!
It’s fun going through this series of Factory records from start to finish. The label’s influence on UK music was huge during the 80s and early 90s.
Oh and lest I forget, the less inflammatory, but still pummeling hard “Stockholm Syndrome”, from a time when Muse really were possibly the best band in the world. Shame they couldn’t keep it up really…ah well.
Knock it back!
I’d forgotten about that track – a friend of mine loved Muse in that era, I haven’t heard much since.
It appears One Direction has also done a song named ‘stockholm syndrome’ – I had to specify the Muse version!
“In the snow, One Night in Copenhagen”
It almost never snows in Copenhagen.
Perhaps it only snowed on that one night!
Cool idea! I was gonna mention the Monty Python but you already nailed it.
My thanks – I’ve been singing the Finland chorus all week!
Miles Davis – Dear Old Stockholm
Danny Kaye – Wonderful Copenhagen (!!)
Don’t forget Tom Waits’ Tom Traubert’s Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen)…
Tough call between Tom and Danny, Aaron!
I love Danny Kaye, that tune is now playing as I type!
I have never seen such a list! This is awesome.
My thanks Jay!
