Hurray for the Riff Raff

June 24, 2014

As all albums on the 1001 list were recorded prior to the year 2006, musically, I’m blissfully living in the past!

Every so often, when I briefly return to the musical present, I come across a new-ish group that really impresses me.

Thanks to the introduction from my esteemed colleague James Tallon, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this group while marking exams:

.

.

The band name, Hurray for the Riff Raff, is of course indisputably excellent.

Fortunately the music is equally strong, with the lead singer’s voice being particularly captivating,

.

Speaking of hurrays, now is probably as good a time as any to say thanks to you fine folks (or riff raff if you prefer!) for all your participation in this blog.  A bunch of fellow bloggers have joined in the conversations recently and it’s been a really nice development seeing this site turn into more of a dialogue than a static document.

All visits/visitors/likes/comments are thoroughly appreciated – according to the site stats, these are the top 5 recent commenters so a shout-out to you 5 especially!

Mike Ladano – record store tales, album reviews, and search terms gone horribly wrong

Sarca – a fellow Ontarian & music/gaming enthusiast

thomasjford – On hiatus for the World Cup, but will return to his Music & Movies cafe soon enough

jprobichaud – Just wrapped up a solid top 100 songs of the 80s

HMO – Keeping us up to date on all the ways to spend disposable income on deluxe new releases.

Cheers! It’s always a pleasure to jam about music.

    • Likewise – and your top 100 appealed to both my enthusiasm for 80s guitar bands & countdowns in general!

  2. How did I not make the Top 5 commenters? I feel so left out. Of course, if it was about the “quality” of our comments I’d be right up there. Haha.

Glad you found some new-ish music to enjoy. I always do my best to find new and new-to-me artists & albums throughout the year even as I work my way through artist catalogs for my blog. There’s so much good stuff out there, just not enough time to hear it all.

    • I thought of you this afternoon Rich – I was pleased to find a $4 vinyl of Shadowland!

I was surprised you weren’t in the stats as a top commenter. I think it’s because it displays the most recent. Every time I put a link to one of my older reviews, I believe the site counts that as a comment for ‘stephen1001’ – so I’m running away with the comments lead!

  3. WOO HOO! I made a list! I made a list!

  4. I’m touched! (*blush*…or maybe that’s the caffeine?) Thanks for the shout-out! Always a pleasure! 🙂

  5. The best new band from New Orleans that I have heard in a long time. I like RIch feel the shame of our lowly standings

    • Perhaps it’s like golf where a low score is good?

I remember a while ago you were looking for new releases to carry in your store, my vote is for the Riff Raff!

There’s been a folk resurgence among a bunch of my high school students, so some LPs of newer folk groups would likely be worth having on hand
