Outkast – Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003)

July 11, 2013

[Album 211/1001]Outkast-speakerboxx-lovebelow

Like late-career Beatle recordings, these are arguably solo recordings released under the Outkast banner.  Also like 1968 Lennon/McCartney, this is stellar.

Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx is probably more consistent but when André is on, he is off the charts.  Roses & Hey Ya! were swings for the fences that are unlikely to be surpassed.

The quintessential hip hop partnership.

  1. I remember when this came out. It confused a lot of people. Around these parts, André’s songs were hits, and everybody wanted his disc, but not the other. None of my customers could understand why they had to buy both.

Regardless I think this was a brave move and it’s a shame these two can’t seem to stay together.

    • They`d be missing out, as disc one`s got some great stuff as well! Absolutely, it seems with most of the great partnerships, even the ones where they don`t like each other by the end, there`s still a synergy that`s never recaptured as solo artists. The Libertines are the other recent example that comes to mind.
