Cyndi Lauper – She’s So Unusual
“…a tourist can’t help but have a distorted opinion of a place: he meets unrepresentative people, has unrepresentative experiences, and runs around imposing upon the place the fantastic mental pictures he had in his head when he got there.” – Michael Lewis, Boomerang.
At times during this project I’ve felt like a tourist. By jumping through genres & decades, despite best intentions of being ‘objective’ (if that’s even attainable), inevitably I’ll have expectations going into a record.
I was expecting this to be an easily dismissible pop record, performed by a Madonna-esque singer/wacky dresser. It turns out that She’s So Unusual is a pop record, Cyndi’s voice also isn’t great and her fashion is unconventional.
It is also a terrific record. Having expectations shattered in this project is great!
I hesitate to call it a ‘guilty pleasure’ as that feels a bit like the person who justifies doing something ‘because they were bored.’
Verdi it is not but who cares? Anyone who references the Marx Brothers’ Night at the Opera (as Cyndi did with the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun video) is just fine in my books.
Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so surprised but I really enjoyed this.
