Duke Ellington – Ellington at Newport (1956)

November 5, 2012

Moustache #9: Duke Ellington
Finest of the 50s

[Album 111/1001]

From what I gather, a review of this one is considered incomplete without using the following terms: Diminuendo in Blue, 27 chorus solo, Paul Gonsalves, Tenor Sax.

Ellington at Newport is a legendary live recording.  Or is/was it?

Although the concert itself is beyond celebrated, it appears only about 40% of the original “live” album was actually, live.  Some inaudible solos & imperfect sections were later rerecorded in a studio.  See a more detailed description here: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=18624&pg=1

Live or not, the record consistently ranks among the top jazz albums, reinvigorating Ellington’s career in the process.  Nice mix of tempos & arrangements and based on the audience reaction (if it’s real!), it sounds like it would have been a blast to have been at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival.

And there’s certainly no debating the authenticity of his moustache.
