Pulp – This is Hardcore (1998)
Pulp is/are The Kinks of Britpop.
60s UK music question: Beatles or Stones?
90s UK music question: Oasis or Blur?
The narrow scope of the question(s) leaves out many other essential artists. For two records at least, Pulp likely deserved to be in the conversation as the best of the bunch in the 90s.
Compared to the releases of their peers at the 1995 peak of Britpop, I’d probably take Different Class over What’s The Story.. and The Great Escape.
Lined up against the 1997/1998 releases (or the end of Britpop), This is Hardcore may be superior to Be Here Now and Blur.
This is Hardcore is certainly not the sound of a band repeating itself. And it is definitely worth a listen or ten.
Not quite as supremely excellent as Different Class, but few 90s releases are.
Harry Potter bonus trivia answer: Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of Pulp, was the lead singer of The Weird Sisters in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
