The Flaming Lips – Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (2002)

October 12, 2012

[Album 102/1001]

Justin Timberlake in a Dolphin costume.  Phoebe Buffay montage from Friends.  One of the better albums in recent memory?

Musically, much of the record is somewhere between Beck & Band of Horses.  Yet as an album, it is something completely bizarre, unique, and original.  Yes, those latter two adjectives can be somewhat synonymous but Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots really is that unusually fresh.

The opening track, Fight Test, makes a strong case for top album opener of the 00s.  The rest is at times folky, at times futuristic, and consistently excellent.

Friends’ fans may remember the lyric rewrite of this album’s title track that ended up as Phoebe Battles the Pink Robots.  The music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpMgQMwDZMY

Nicely done. I’m sure you’re probably aware of this, but check out Cat Stevens song Father and Son. Wayne was obviously listening to Tea For The Tillerman around this time…

    • I hadn’t thought of the connection but you’re right – and I was a big fan of Tea for the Tillerman too!
