Lenny Kravitz – Let Love Rule (1989)

October 9, 2012

[Album 101/1001]

Born in the 90s/00s?  He’s the guy who plays Cinna in The Hunger Games.

Born in the 80s?  You probably remember that what he really wanted to know was whether you were gonna go his way.

For those born in the 70s and before, this was likely the introduction to the remarkably consistent Lenny Kravitz.

With his tunes, he finds a groove and sits there comfortably.  Sometimes to a fault (his take on American Woman sat back a bit too much) but here it works effectively.  I Built This Garden For Us and the title track are two of the numbers I’ve caught myself singing on numerous occasions since.

It’s not that his songs are devoid of any substance, it’s more so that the style is what makes Lenny Kravitz memorable.  Perhaps what’s most impressive is that fashion trends come and go and are often viewed in hindsight as ill-advised.  With Lenny, regardless of the decade/entertainment medium, he is always en vogue.

Fans are understandably smug in showing little regret for their high school crushes – as one friend put it after seeing him age so gracefully into his recent movie role, “*high-fives my seventeen year-old self*”
