Kid Rock – Devil Without a Cause (1998)

August 23, 2012

[Album 84/1001]

Ahh guilty pleasures.  Keanu Reeves.  Duran Duran’s Ordinary World.  Kid Rock.

In my defense, at one point on Devil Without a Cause he references the greatest Captain in professional sports history (Steve Yzerman), so it can’t be completely unredeemable!

Though much like The Beach Boys Today!, this one seems to be near equal parts frustrating and fantastic.

– The incessant reminders that he is in fact, Kid Rock.  The first name drop enhances (the intro to Bawitaba) and the rest feel like filler.  Especially considering that in Only God Knows Why he acknowledges that “everybody knows my name.”  Redundant.
– That particular song, Only God Knows Why, is almost a terrific Lynyrd Skynyrd-esque ballad.  Sadly, the song is spoiled by the grating vocal effect.  He’s credited as producer, he could have prevented it.
Cowboy has a great groove, F*ck Off introduces a young Marshall Mathers, but then other songs feel like treading formulaic water, notably when more than a few of the lyrics would be only slightly revised on the later hit, American Badass.

Listening in 3-song intervals?  I’ll take it.  Album?  I don’t quite have the endurance for the whole thing in one sitting.
