Suede – Suede (1993)

August 6, 2012

[Album 78/1001]

If you combine the right ingredients in the right amounts, chances are a recipe will be a success.

Looking at the raw materials for Suede, the outcome looked promising:

– 1990s British Guitar Rock, more specifically the album credited with starting the short-lived but wildly successful subgenre of Britpop
– A singer whose style and performance include elements of Morrissey and David Bowie
– A brief, yet important musical partnership that ended in acrimony
– The last album with the original lead guitarist, leading to the obligatory scouring of lyrics, fans searching for hints of a brewing storm

Occasionally there are outliers in which despite the right mix, for some reason the end product doesn’t work out.

This was no outlier: Suede looked good on paper and it sounded just fine as well.
