Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris – Trio (1987)

August 3, 2012

[Album 77/1001]

A tale of three trios:

1) Saw The Good Lovelies in concert last year: stellar songs, solid stage presence, superb show.

2) Saw The Be Good Tanyas in concert last week: disastrous performance, dismal stage presence, departed before the show ended.  And I stayed in the theatre for the entirety of Speed 2: Cruise Control.

3) Needing my faith in the magic of the female vocal trio restored, Trio had to be the next album in the rotation.  Fortunately, there was no bitter disappointment here.

I could moan that it wasn’t as energetic as I’d like, but perhaps that’s appropriate for the overall lonesome hearts theme.  That being said, check out Lonesome Hearts by The Good Lovelies for yearning (with the requested energy) done to perfection.

Pleasant harmonies abound and kudos to Dolly Parton for some strong lyrics in her contribution of Wildflowers, “When a flower grows wild, it can always survive.”  It’s not difficult to see why critics & audiences were so delighted one score and five years ago.

Faith, sufficiently restored.
