Louis Prima – The Wildest! (1956)

June 5, 2012

[Album 58/1001]

I recently had the privelege of playing guitar in the pit band for Frontenac Secondary School’s production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.  In one of the musical numbers, the guidance regarding tempo or feel on the sheet music was ‘Louis Prima Shuffle.’

At first, the instructions were a bit cryptic, as I thought I was unfamiliar with the shuffler in question.

Upon listening to The Wildest!, the instructions are becoming clear:

– It appears Brian Setzer’s Jump, Jive, an’ Wail was a cover, Prima’s original is featured here
– Although it wasn’t his version used in the film, I couldn’t help but picture George McFly at the dance in Back To The Future when listening to Night Train
– A decade later, Louis Prima would provide the vocals for the orangutan King Louie in The Jungle Book

So now when given the sheet music instructions of ‘Louis Prima Shuffle,’ I’ll interpret that as upbeat, distinctive and perhaps most importantly, fun.
