Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd – Jazz Samba (1962)

May 2, 2012

[Album 45/1001]

If Chinese Democracy set the bar for inefficiency in recording and releasing an album, Jazz Samba must be pretty close to the opposite end of the spectrum.

Recorded in one day, released two months later, seven tunes providing just over a half an hour of toe-tapping bossa-nova.  Getz’s tenor saxophone and Byrd’s guitar mesh neatly, with the rhythm section supplying a really nice understated groove.

The songs are somehow enhanced by the fact that the instrumentation (tenor sax, guitars, basses, drums) is relatively sparse; there’s also something quite refreshing about the lack of vocals & overdubs.

Very enjoyable.
