Britney Spears – …Baby One More Time (1999)

April 21, 2012

[Album 41/1001]

“It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle & kind”
– The Smiths, I Know it’s Over

Fair enough: when reviewing Britney, I shall try to have guts!

– There’s no denying that the title track has a terrific chord progression.

– I always appreciate a good cross-promotional effort.  To coincide with Britney’s single (You Drive Me) Crazy, the 1999 teen romantic comedy originally titled Next to You was shrewdly renamed Drive Me Crazy.

– Effective pop songwriters/producers were present.  Max Martin’s production resume (Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne…) is particularly star-studded.

– It was an album of its time, notably the penultimate track, E-mail my heart.

– In terms of contributions to the economy, she’s managed to keep many photographers, entertainment tv shows, and grocery store impulse-buy magazines in business over the last thirteen years.

I recall hearing people talk about seeing the 1991 video for Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time and immediately realizing that music was about to change.

I’m guessing many would say the same about seeing the video premiere for Hit Me Baby One More Time.  For better or worse, Britney’s impact on pop music (and pop culture for that matter) is immeasurable.

  1. I love Britney. I like her because every now and then I just want to hear a pop song. A goofy pop song. I agree about this album being of it’s time.. but I still think Britney brings good pop music to the radio.
