Doves – The Last Broadcast (2002)

April 19, 2012

[Album 40/1001]

Best musical city ever – Nashville? Seattle? Liverpool?

After listening to The Last Broadcast, it is now that much more difficult to choose anything but Manchester, England.

There’s some great instrumentation on the record, starting off with the glockenspiel ear candy on Words.  Some nice lower-register woodwinds make an appearance on Friday’s Dust, well played!

I’m surprised Pounding didn’t turn Doves into more of a household name in North America.  Although it certainly wasn’t as popular as Coldplay’s Viva la Vida (2008), it’s an equally powerful listen.  The acoustic-driven M62 Song also sounds reminiscent of a few tunes from Radiohead’s In Rainbows (2007)

So perhaps The Last Broadcast is a bit like the TV show Arrested Development; critically acclaimed and adored by fans, but sadly a bit ahead of its time.  Had the album release been delayed a few years, Doves may have enjoyed more widespread North American commercial success.

They did reach #1 on the UK Album chart however; add Doves to the already impressive list of The Smiths, Oasis, The Verve, The Stone Roses, New Order, Joy Division, The Fall, Happy Mondays, James, Herman’s Hermits, heck even the Bee Gees, and that should lock up the Best Musical City Ever title as well.
