The Zutons – Who Killed…The Zutons? (2004)

April 7, 2012

[Album 36/1001]

I was leery when I saw both track one and the album title referenced the band name.  Fortunately the self-referential name checking ended there and the album hopped around from genre to genre quite nicely.

There’s anywhere from gentle folk (the pleasant Confusion) to stomp-along tunes that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Franz Ferdinand record (You will you won’t).  By the time track 10 rolls around (the country-esque Remember Me), I had to check to make sure my playlist hadn’t moved onto another artist.

Any band that employs a full-time saxophone player is OK in my books. Abi Harding’s playing may not be overly technical, but it certainly adds a fun element to the already effective songs.

Who Killed…The Zutons? shows that Liverpool, England is no one-trick-pony when it comes to bands who create interesting, hard-to-categorize music.  Excellent debut.

That being said, The Zutons probably won’t achieve the same international superstardom as those other fabulous four Liverpudlians…
