Kings of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak (2004)

December 21, 2011

[Album 5/1001]

ImageWhen Kings of Leon songs were inescapable in 2008/2009, I didn’t fully understand their appeal.  They were OK, not sure what all the fuss was about.

An esteemed colleague assured me – listen to Aha Shake Heartbreak – that album was more deserving of attention.

The analysis of many groups rings true here as well: their older stuff is better.  It’s a lot scrappier, which is a positive as some of the more recent efforts drifted into overproduction.

Some solid standout tracks (King of the Rodeo, The Bucket) and others (such as The Libertines-esque Velvet Snow) would probably have a good energy live.

No major misses but I was left feeling it was a good, not quite great, record.
